About the event
Red Ribbon Week, celebrated each year from October 23–31, is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign. It encourages communities across the country to take a visible stand against substance misuse and promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles.
The campaign began in honor of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was tragically kidnapped, tortured, and killed in 1985 by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. To honor his sacrifice, friends and family began wearing red ribbons and forming “Camarena Clubs” as a symbol of their commitment to living drug-free and raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
